I have a love-hate relationship with social media, as most of us do. In the early days, social media helped me start-up my cartooning career.
It was through consistently producing work and sharing my work online that I taught myself to draw comics and get real-time feedback from readers.
15 years later, we live in a reality that is completely oversaturated with content and constant, never-ending feedback loops on everything that exists, real or imagined. It's still a tool a lot of us need, but we've also witnessed the dangers of the digital mob and how quickly they can start a stampede with damning consequences in real life.
It's difficult to be on social media these days and not have the urge to quit entirely. (I have done this before, for my own sanity). My ongoing dilemma is how to protect myself from the harms, while still using the tools I need to keep cartooning.
I hope this week’s comic strip gets a laugh, even though I’m being super serious.
The jury's still out on whether the benefits of staying on social media outweigh the costs, but for now, the deal I'm making is this: Social media does not control how I get my news or emotional support, and it does not control how I feel about myself. Those are my boundaries for the time being.
Let's see how it goes. Thanks for reading! Stay safe and sane.
