There are a lot of these "truisms" about writing that just seem dogmatic. The existence of slice-of-life media shows that not all stories need tension or conflict. I'm not a writer, but the whole "your story needs X" attitude bugs me.
There's also a rule that the protagonist has to screw things up so the reader is screaming at them, "No, don't do that!" Instead, I want the protagonist to be so much smarter than me and make "wise" choices. I guess that's not very interesting...
